2nd Class Science Week
Science Week in 2nd Class: Exploring, Experimenting & Discovering!
Science Week in 2nd Class was packed with curiosity, excitement, and lots of hands-on fun. Our young scientists explored a range of experiments that helped them learn about reactions, forces, and how everyday materials behave in surprising ways. Here’s a look at some of the highlights!
🔬 Pepper and Soap Experiment
We kicked off the week with a simple but amazing demonstration of how soap works. The children sprinkled pepper onto water and watched it float on the surface. But the magic happened when they dipped a soapy finger into the cup—the pepper shot to the edges instantly!
This experiment helped us see how soap breaks surface tension, the same way it helps remove germs from our hands.
🎈 Balloon Static Electricity
Next, we explored static electricity using balloons. After rubbing a balloon on their jumper or hair, the children discovered they could make the balloon pick stick to the wall or even make hair stand on end!
There were plenty of giggles and smiles as they saw invisible electric charges at work.
🏗️ Paper Tower STEM Challenge
One of the challenges of the week was building the tallest possible tower using only paper and tape.
The students worked in teams to plan, test, and build their structures. Some towers were thin and tall, others were wide and sturdy—but every group used creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving to engineer their best design.
It was a fantastic introduction to STEM thinking!
🌋 Lava Lamp Experiment
Our homemade lava lamps were a colourful highlight! Using oil, water, food colouring, and a fizzy tablet, the children watched bubbly “lava” rise and fall inside a clear container.
This experiment helped them see how liquids with different densities behave—and it looked amazing too.
🍬 Skittles and Water Reaction
To wrap up the week, we created beautiful swirling rainbows using Skittles and warm water.
When water touched the sweets, the coloured sugar dissolved and spread outwards, creating bright patterns. The children observed how dissolving works and how colours move through water.
A Week Full of Wonder
Science Week was a fantastic opportunity for 2nd Class to ask questions, test ideas, and explore the world around them. Their enthusiasm and curiosity were inspiring, and we’re already looking forward to our next scientific adventure!
